Good reasons for keeping the president at home
Article Abstract:
Interpersonal skills become exaggerated when a cross-cultural or international factor is introduced. Communicating across cultural lines is difficult. Executive behaviors in this situation are discussed, and five types of listening during a business negotiation are identified: listening to collect data, cynical listening, offensive listening, polite listening, and active listening. When individuals from low-context cultures communicate with people from high-context cultures, listening becomes more important to the communication.

A survey of executives with culturally diverse employees reveals that managers believe team work offers a chance to share technological developments and to compete more successfully in a global marketplace, but difficult communication, different work styles, and complex decision-making can cause problems with the approach.
