The analysis of development control decisions
Article Abstract:
The development control process carried out by UK local planning authorities has the potential to be a source of important information on the impacts of the UK planning system. However, until now little use has been made of the data. The data has been criticised for being hard to analyse except in a simplistic manner, and for the inherent flaws it contains. There are four approaches to using the data: a simple analysis; a technical exercise; a power struggle; and a post-modern approach. Development control research would be most useful if several methodological approaches were combined.

Planning research and the policy process
Article Abstract:
Land-use planning needs to be supported by research, but too often the research programmes commissioned by governments are aimed more at justifying existing policies and serving short-term policy needs than at examining basic problems and requirements in order to help future policy development. Independent research has an important role to play, but in the UK this is hindered by the fact that there are few independent institutes which can act as 'broker' between the client and contractor, that is the policymaker and researcher.
