The battle plan
Article Abstract:
The new Pakistani leader, General Pervez Musharraf, gained power after a coup, and has set out his new agenda. He favors a free press and 'true' democracy, and is prepared to talk to India. He also plans to tackle theft of public assets, and is a religious moderate. The US appears unlikely to call for aid to be withdrawn if Musharraf behaves in a moderate way. Inflation has dropped and foreign exchange has been accumulated. Musharraf faces a dilemma in that political reform is needed, and leaving it to political parties is no guarantee that it will be achieved, while he will be criticized for being undemocratic if he carries out reform.

An orgy of reprisal in Pakistan?
Article Abstract:
The military leaders of a coup in Pakistan have put Nawaz Sharif, former prime minister, on trial, and are also taking action against others connected with Sharif's government. Sharif set up anti-terrorist courts which are being used to try him. His relations face corruption charges. The trials are likely to be backed by public support, due to a widespread view that wrongdoing in high places has created problems for Pakistan. The coup leaders are also likely to gain legitimacy from the trials.
