Sharif's sticky wicket
Article Abstract:
Pakistan's prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, has met US president, Bill Clinton, and appears to have agreed to a withdrawal of Pakistani infiltrators in Kashmir. Some of these infiltrators could be troops from the Pakistani armed forces. There may have been promises of aid to Pakistan in order to secure this agreement. India has yet to see signs of a withdrawal, and casualties have risen. Indian analysts fear that Sharif may be unable to achieve a withdrawl of the infiltrators.

A chance for peace in Kashmir?
Article Abstract:
There are hopes of a peace agreement between Pakistan and India over Kashmir, and Pakistan is under international pressure to withdraw infiltrators in Kashmir. Pakistan could provoke a war if the offensie continues, but denies involvement in the occupation by fighters in Kashmir. Islamist fundamentalists criticise the Pakistani government if it appears to be conciliatory over Kashmir. Disagreement over Kashmir is likely to continue even if a withdrawal is achieved.

After Kashmir
Article Abstract:
There is concern that the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir could end in war. The problem has to be tackled by the two countries involved, but outsiders can help, and China could play a useful role. Pakistan has triggered the dispute in 1999, though India did not improve relations with Pakistan when Indian nuclear weapons were tested in 1998. Regional discussions are needed, involving China, in order to improve stability in the region.
