The bean counter bites back
Article Abstract:
Saatchi & Saatchi, an advertising agency, has been renamed Cordiant, with Charlie Scott as chief executive. He is an accountant who was brought in to the company by a management team led by Robert Louis Dreyfus, as chief financial controller. The company is currently renegotiating its 500 million pounds sterling bank facility, but profit for 1994 is expected to be 30 million pounds sterling. Scott believes that the current crisis is unlike the crisis faced in 1990 when the company faced debts of 700 million pounds sterling.

Tunnel vision on Europe
Article Abstract:
The UK is closely linked with Europe economically, with 60% of its trade being with European countries. However, almost all its economic and financial views are influenced by the US. The UK seems to focus on developments in the US almost to the exclusion of events in continental Europe, and this means that knowledge about continental Europe among ordinary Britons has declined. It is vital that more attention is given to how Europe is changing and evolving.
