The beef over bananas
Article Abstract:
The US has imposed sanctions on the European Union (EU), cutting off imports of a number of European products, in a move that points to problems with the World Trade Organization (WTO). There is concern that the dispute could widen, since the US is angered by the EU refusal to import beef treated with hormones and the EU is not enthusiastic about genetically modified food from the US. The WTO was initially successful, dealing with 163 disputes, 53 of which were brought by the US. Fear that it cannot solve disputes may mean that strong economies such as the US will impose unilateral sanctions.
