The big switch: Calcutta's ruling communists give capitalism a chance
Article Abstract:
Calcutta's attitude has become pro-business in an effort to revamp the city's deteriorating infrastructure and become more engaged in Southeast Asia's booming economies. The city and the surrounding state of W Bengal were once powerhouses, the center of Britain's activities in the region, but different Indian policies and the communist party's local strength destroyed most of that legacy. Now things look better, at least on paper, especially regarding the electricity supply, privately managed for the past six years.

Back to the centre: communists lose no-confidence motion
Article Abstract:
Nepal's Congress party resumed power on Sept 11, 1995, 10 months after losing it to the United Marxist-Leninist party led by Man Mohan Adhikari. King Birendra asked Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba to form a new govt with the royalist Nepal Sadbhavana Party and the far-right-wing Rastriya Prajatantra Party, after the UML won a no-confidence vote 88 to 107. The new coalition is unusual and may prove unstable due to the RPP's support for traditional village-level administration.

Valley of violence: communists agitate to unsettle government
Article Abstract:
Communists in Nepal are increasing pressure on the government of G.P. Koirala to resign. Anti-government riots in Kathmandu killed 25 people, and 550 were arrested. The riots were a reaction to the deaths of communist leaders M.K. Bhandari and Jivraj Ashrit and to charges that the government conspired to kill them. The communists control 82 of the 205 seats in parliament and form a strong opposition force that is demanding an impartial judicial investigation into the deaths.
