The call of nature
Article Abstract:
Scolton Manor visitor centre, Wales has been designed to be environmentally senstitive. Built of natural, local materials, the building uses wind and solar energy and has a water saving drainage and sewerage treatment system. Waste water and sewerage is macerated and drained to a series of settlement ponds where the sewage is treated by natural processes. The resulting treated water is mixed with rain water in the third pond and then re-used for WC flushing. The system's advantages are, low cots and efficient removal of pollutants. It does however, require a relatively large, flat land area.

Tunnel vision
Article Abstract:
A particular feature of the Amenity Building for the Channel Tunnel Terminal in Folkestone, UK, is the tented fabric roof. The building, a white glazed pavilion designed by Building Design Partnership (BDP), is intended to offer a direct contrast with the underground nature of the Channel Tunnel, with the fabric roof being above a silver aluminium roof which has tapered edges. The use of a glass fibre roof-fabric offered considerable cost savings, and it also allows the use of unique lighting features. Various design aspects are discussed.

Room for growth
Article Abstract:
Architect Richard Murphy has been responsible for designing an extension to an eighteenth-century house near Edinburgh, Scotland. The extension, which incorporates a kitchen and a nursery, occupies an area originally taken up by outhouses, and a rebuilt part of the original stone wall encloses the nursery. The back wall of the kitchen and nursery is lit by a glazed skylight running the length of the pitched roof at its apex. The kitchen features a gently curved wall of white harling.
