The year of living dangerously
Article Abstract:
The RIBA saw many internal conflicts during 1995, and therefore made little real progress. At the department of the environment, John Gummer's reputation as environment secretary improved, especially as he emphasised the importance of architects being more confident about their role. English Heritage suffered a blow as only 21 or the 40 post-war office and industrial buildings it recommended for listed status were accepted. The department of national heritage introduce the idea of consulting the public over listing, while the lottery bodies attracted criticism for allocating funds to high profile buildings such as the Royal Opera House.

Sorting out the South Bank
Article Abstract:
South Bank Centre (SBC) project director Joanna Kennedy has a vital part to play in the planned redevelopment of the centre, but she seems to enjoy the challenge. The SBC will soon present its bid for Lottery funds to the Arts Council: it is thought the project could cost up to 150 million pounds sterling. Kennedy is associate director at Ove Arup & Partners, but is seconded to the SBC during the redevelopment. Her main tasks are to keep to the brief while meeting the diverse needs of users; and to keep disruption to a minimum so that at least part of the centre is open at any time.

The boom that never was
Article Abstract:
Poland has a near critical housing shortage and it is estimated that about 2.7 million houses are required over the next nine years. There is also a shortage of office accommodation and more hotel rooms will also be required. The problems are, in part, due to restrictive building controls and lack of foreign investment.
