Economic expansion in the cities far outpaces that of rural areas despite government policies designed to reduce poverty in the countryside. As the rural poor increasingly move to the cities in search of work, government officials are encouraging industry to build in rural areas.

Robots are now being used to great effect in deep sea research. The Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute's unmanned submersible, called Jason, is one such robot. The focus of current research on undersea robots is on making them less dependent on ground-based control systems.
