The chancellor cracks his whip
Article Abstract:
The German coalition government aims to close down nuclear power plants, but there is a division on when this should be carried out. The Greens are in favor of a five-year schedule, and the Social Democrats favor ten years. Chancellor Gerhard Schroder also favors consultations with industry and his view is prevailing over that of the Greens. This dispute has helped Schroder improve his reputation for being decisive and has helped increase his influence in the coalition government.
