Is there a crisis?
Article Abstract:
There are a number of emerging democracies which are being assessed by observers from mature democracies, yet there are signs of a loss of public confidence in the institutions of mature democracies. Trust in government has dropped in the US and Canada. There is less information on Japan, but there is a reduction in the percentage of people surveyed who feel that they have an influence on politics. There are similar trends in Western Europe. There is still strong faith in democracy, and the changes could be linked the media portrayals of politicians and political institutions.

Democracy is on the march
Article Abstract:
Democracy has been portrayed as making progress with the end of the cold war, but there are reasons for challenging this view. South Africa and the former Soviet Union have seen changes, and democracy appears to have become well established in Latin America, but there is less clarity about the situation in Asia. The Middle East faces demographic and other problems, and the southern republics of the former Soviet Union have not shown progress toward democracy. Nigeria and Indonesia may, however, be making some progress.
