The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Asia is costing billions of dollars, and commerce and tourism are especially distressed. One report calculated the cost of SARS to be $10.6 billion, and another predicted a global cost of over $150 billion.

The SARS epidemic that has hit much of Asia has avoided Thailand. However, international tourism to Thailand has declined. For April, 2003, tourism has declined by more than half compared to the same time last year.
