The cult of the true fan
Article Abstract:
A bid for Manchester United soccer club by British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) has led to an expression of concern from the United Kingdom sports minister, Tony Banks. The UK prime minister, Tony Blair, aims to represent himslef as a champion of the people as well as a friend to big business, and the bid means that both goals cannot be achieved. Soccer is big business and is also a populist sport in the UK. Commercialization has brought some benefits for soccer fans, such as better facilities and less chance of attack by rival fans.

In search of team spirit
Article Abstract:
There are 16 African countries competing in the African Nations Cup, a soccer championship. Poor management and poverty have hampered the development of soccer in Africa, and embezzlement of ticket sales proceeds may mean that players do not get their wages. There are improvements in the quality of soccer in Africa, and some of this can be attributed to TV, which allows people to study games more easily, even in village locations. Africa could produce a team that wins the soccer World Cup.
