The electric acid test
Article Abstract:
Deregulation is bringing major changes to the US power industry and could allow over half of US consumers to select their supplier five years from 1999. Many US consumers are concerned that deregulation could affect efficiency of power delivery, and power cuts are already a problem. There are also arguments that the private sector will not provide enough spare capacity and only the public sector is able to do this. Deregulation could make power delivery more efficient, and uncertainties relating to deregulation are a reason for power plant construction being delayed.

It'll be a shock; electricity in Europe
Article Abstract:
The UK's electric power industry is fairly competitive, while Germany's electric utilities enjoy local monopolies and are marked by political interference. The European Union's requirement that 23% of the electric power industry be deregulated by 1999, may improve the situation.
