It is difficult to say that Asia's economies are now beginning to recover, according to Anthony Chan, chief regional economist at HSBC James Capel Asia. There are particularly poor prospects for recovery in Indonesia, according to Miron Mushkat, director of economics and strategy at Indocam Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority's decision to invest in stocks and derivatives to defend the Hong Kong dollar's peg to the US dollar is a reflection of the fact that this body has been wanting to take a more proactive approach for some time. The stock intervention will actually have a negative impact on market mechanisms, with bureaucrats giving the impression that they feel that they know better than markets. Distorting markets in this way is likely to encourage speculation.
