The future of computing: after the PC
Article Abstract:
Personal computers (PCs) are likely to become less important by the start of the 21st century. The PC will not disappear, but many of its functions will be taken over by more specialized devices that are easier to use and more reliable than PCs. Set top boxes can be used for video games, while home banking services can be provided through fixed-screen phones. US households have a PC penetration rate of some 40%, which has remained stable, and users are often unconfident about using their PCs. Companies such as Sony that specialize in appliances are most likely to benefit from the new trend.
