The godfather stumbles
Article Abstract:
Shin Kanemaru, an influential Japanese politician, resigned as vice-president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in order to minimize damage caused by his involvement in a financial scandal. Kanemaru's secretary had accepted 500 million yen in 1990 from the former president of the Tokyo Sagawa Kyubin trucking company, Hiroyasu Watanabe. Kanemaru's resignation is expected to help him maintain the real basis of his power, the leadership of the Takeshita faction, the largest sub-group in the LDP. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa is expected to reshuffle his cabinet in order to replace ministers who might be involved in the scandal.

Scandal tactics
Article Abstract:
Japanese opposition's technique to undermine Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa's government concerns the Fumio Abe-Kyowa Corp bribery scandal and the defense spending budget. The Social Democratic Party of Japan (SDPJ) and the Komei Party have called for the resignation of Abe from the parliament. This move, however, was contested by Miyazawa for legal reasons. Meanwhile, the Democratic Socialist Party and the Japan Communist Party, together with SDPJ and the Komei Party, plan to demand a decrease in the defense budget. All four parties plan to field candidates in the Jul 1992 elections.

Unexploded bomb
Article Abstract:
Japan's political establishment has been shaken by another scandal involving political contributions. Tokyo Sagawa Kyubin Company Ltd. is suspected of being connected to the crime syndicate Inagawakai. The transport firm allegedly donated a total of 40 billion yen to more than 200 politicians from the opposition and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Japanese politicians are increasingly coming under close scrutiny, which has led to the arrest of some members of Japan's ruling party.
