Albatross Co of Thailand is the exporter of canned ready-to-eat rice under the brand name Khun Perm. The company, whose product is set to appear in London, UK-based Harrod's, is owned by Permphan Neowakul, the 40-year-old entrepreneur who began his business in 1997. Mr. Perm, as he is called, says that the major problem that needed to be solved in the operation was how much water was needed in the mixture. Albatross ships as many as 30 containers a month of canned rice to such destinations as France, Germany, Holland and Saudi Arabia.

Standard Chartered expands
Article Abstract:
Standard Chartered Bank PLC of the UK has agreed to acquire a 68.4% stake in Nakornthon Bank of Thailand for 6.2 billion baht ($164.8 million) on May 5, 1999. The deal, Standard Chartered's second bank purchase in a week, is seen as a positive development for the continuing recovery of the Thai banking industry. Under the terms of the agreement, which still requires the approval of the Thai Central Bank, Nakornthon Bank investors will accept a write-down of 10 baht to 0.01 baht for their shares.
