North Korea's economy is being suffocated by the international collapse of communism. There are indications that this could possibly lead to Korean reunification if North Korean leader Kim Il Sung stays in power long enough. His son would likely retreat the country back into isolationism.

Storm warning in Korea
Article Abstract:
The recent defection of Hwang Jang Yop is another indication that the North Korean government may be on the verge of collapse. There is widespread hunger and discontent. Although a democratic transition in North Korea is desirable, countries such as Japan fear a reunified Korea.

East Asian economic prosperity does not guarantee peaceful relations. Diplomatic means of settling conflicts must be fostered by regional superpowers such as the US, Japan, China and Russia. North Korean aggression is a key persistent threat to regional stability.
