Iran hopes that with a new moderate government in place, it can resume relations with non-Islamic countries. President Hashemi Rafsanjani wants open the country to more trade and foreign investment. Before the West agrees, Iran should agree to drop the religious edict condemning Salman Rushdie to death.

The US has asked its allies to stop selling technology and equipment to Iran that could be used to manufacture weapons. Legislation has been proposed to stop such sales from US companies as well. The US fears Iran could become aggressive, just like Iraq.

Iran refuses to rescind its call for the death of author Salman Rushdie, who supposedly committed a blasphemy against Islam in his book. 'The Satanic Verses.' The international community should do more to punish Iran for this outrageous call for murder.
