The great learning
Article Abstract:
Literacy has become more widespread during the 20th century, and education has come to be seen as a right. Literacy levels were relatively high in China during the Song dynasty, with some 30% of the population literate in 1000. Literacy in Japan in 1868 was similar to that of Britain. Mongol invasions affected China's development from 1200. Prussia developed schools at the end of the 19th century, and its educational strength helped power the industrial revolution. Technology has tended to be a stimulus to education, by increasing demand for educated workers, though traditional teaching methods appear to be the most successful.

A great time to work
Article Abstract:
There is ambiguity in the US attitude to vactions, and many people fear to take time off work. New technology means that it is easier to work while on vacation. Leisure time is seen as a privilege in the US, and as a right in Europe. There is no legal requirement for US employers to provide holidays. Paid summer holidays only became common in the Depression. The experiences of different ethnic groups on vacation became similar, though they may have gone to separate resorts.
