The heyday of the auction
Article Abstract:
Auctions have been especially important in certain markets such as fine art, commodities, and some financial securities. Auctions are more efficient than some other types of price setting, such as haggling, in that a wide range of buyers can be accessed. Online auctions have proved to be popular and competition is increasing for this type of business. There is potential for business-to-business auctions. Fraud and collusion are a possibility. Prices could rise for second-hand goods, and fall for new goods, partly because there will be competition from second-hand goods.
