The human factor
Article Abstract:
Investment decisions need to consider the human factor. This refers to the individuality of nationals, as manifest in the Danish vote that spurned the much-planned and long-awaited Maastricht Treaty. This development has direct bearing on the European investment scenario of the future. While the US economy can expect to improve due to the North America Free Trade Agreement, Europe cannot forecast the same. The market for bonds and equities may not significantly improve until the Maastricht Treaty and the European economic development plan generate better conomic indicators.

Fruitless effort
Article Abstract:
Dole Foods chief executive David Murdock has little success in sight for his 10-year, $400 million labor of love to turn the Hawaiian island of Lanai into a popular tourist resort. The largely barren island, sheltered from rain by Maui, grew the company's pineapple crop until cheaper Philippine and Thai producers took that business. Murdock has built two high-end resorts and two golf courses with 750 houses and condos, trying to lure Americans who make $150,000 or more per year into buying a third or fourth home there.

Season of false hopes
Article Abstract:
The chances for substantial economic recovery are remote for the major economies of the world although the US, Germany and Japan are trying to enhance business performance. In spite of this, the US dollar and cyclical stocks may improve because of the softening of the deutschemark and yen. In Asia, equity markets in Hong Kong, Pakistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka performed well in 1991. The improvements in Asian markets are attributed to the structural reforms made in the different countries' economies.
