The toll of low wages
Article Abstract:
The growing number of workers' strikes in Indonesia is caused by low wages and the workers' increasing awareness of their rights. Aside from minimal wages, workers also suffer from both unemployment and underemployment because of the lack of proper education and skills and the oversupply of labor. Labor unions, which were set up after gaining independence from Dutch rule as an extension of political parties, later evolved into a separate entity. Only 8,000 out of 11,000 companies with labor unions have collective bargaining agreements, 70% of which are not effected.

Article Abstract:
Indonesia's AIDS problem is still highly controllable, with only 21 AIDS and 30 HIV infection cases reported. Nevertheless, the country's religious and health authorities are involved in the campaign to stop the spread of the disease at this early stage. A recent government order required that all blood donated to the blood bank in some cities be thoroughly examined for the presence of the AIDS virus and sexually transmitted diseases. Muslim religious leaders have expressed their willingness to cooperate in the implementation of programs designed to combat AIDS.

Passport control
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian parliament passed a new immigration bill on Mar 4, 1992 which may eventually prohibit 'disloyal' citizens from returning home. The bill, which sets guidelines on travel restrictions, includes provisions on the re-entry of foreign-based Indonesians. The controversial provisions were introduced by military appointees to parliament. Human rights lawyers were quick to condemn this blatant violation of constitutional rights.
