The jumbo on the runway
Article Abstract:
There are indications that a deal is being arranged to ensure that antitrust authorities in the UK no longer have any objections to the planned merger between British Airways (BA) and American Airlines (AA). It is believed that the deal would attempt to produce additional capacity from Heathrow airport, thus giving competing airlines more take-off and landing slots. According to the conditions of the deal, the UK government is working with BAA, which owns Heathrow, and the Civil Aviation Authority to boost the airport's capacity by allowing planes to fly closer together. This solution would not require BA or AA to give up any slots.

Right destination, wrong route
Article Abstract:
Seemingly anti-competitive alliances between airlines are helping competition by means of the open-skies condition their governments put on approval. The latest and biggest alliance, between American and British Airways, may depend on full open-skies agreements between the US and UK.

Talked off?
Article Abstract:
The proposed partnership between American Airlines and British Airways is hampered by failed efforts by the US and UK to agree on an airline deregulation treaty. The UK does not want US airlines to be able to pick up passengers at Heathrow airport in London.
