The last emperor
Article Abstract:
Hyundai has not followed the trend of South Korean conglomerates, or chaebol, which are seeking to restructure, but instead is making acquisitions. These include Asia Motors and Kia Motors. The acquisitions are linked to the ambitions of Hyundai's founder, Chung Ju Yung. Government policy is for the chaebol focus on core businesses. Hyundai has a range of these, so has some leeway for diversity. The company will make 11 disposals of subsidiaries in 1999, but the acquisitions will offset these, and mean that Hyundai will have a greater need for capital.
