Despite changes to a more capitalist economy, which has improved the lives of many since 1977, China faces great economic challenges. The government's decision not to privatize farmland still affects the industry and the poor financial state of state-owned businesses leaves room for reform.

Vietnam will have to grapple with protests among its farmers, who are unhappy because of their poverty, the increasing tax burden they face, and corruption within the government. This problem comes as Vietnam's president and prime minister are relinquishing their posts on Sep 20, 1997.
