Visit to the doctor
Article Abstract:
The author tells a tale of a young woman, Arianna, from a futuristic setting who visits a traditional doctor called Galen. Arianna is an inhabitant of the "Bubble", an enclosed city where people travel in sky taxis and are ruled by the "Conditioner". The inhabitants of the Bubble remain young because their gerontogenes, or genetic elements that cause aging, have been eliminated. The Conditioner forbids inhabitants of the Bubble to leave the city and go Outside, which refers to the natural forest surrounding the Bubble. A doctor called Galen and his wife had refused gerontogene ablation, or elimination, and maintained the ability to resist thought manipulation by the Conditioner. Hence, Galen was able to confound the Conditioner. When Galen's wife died, he left the Bubble and was able to live Outside permanently. Galen lived in a hut called "Wood house", where he kept his medical books, an array of medicinal herbs, and other concoctions. Tim, the man who sells coffee in the Bubble, referred Arianna to Galen for medical advice. Arianna had an illness that was diagnosed as lymphoma, or cancer of the lymphatic system, by the computers and polyscanners of the Bubble. However, she did not trust the technician in the Bubble and failed to report for ablative therapy, or treatment to remove the lymphoma. Using the traditional physical examination, Galen found that she had a soft swelling under her left rib cage, and paleness of the palms and conjunctivae, but no swollen glands (commonly observed in lymphoma patients). He diagnosed her as having babesiosis, a disease caused by a parasite and transmitted by a tick. Galen treated her with medicinal tea and other natural concoctions. Arianna expressed a desire to remain with Galen on the Outside, and admitted to being in love with Galen. However, Galen reminded her that she was his patient and he was her doctor, and her remaining with him was not appropriate. Hence, Arianna returned to the Bubble and promised to visit the doctor again. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
