The missing link
Article Abstract:
The manufacturing industry in Thailand is prospering through the influx of foreign investment. However, most of the manufacturing being done is final assembly. The Thai Board of Investment has, therefore, started a program designed to establish linkages between local suppliers and manufacturers. The concept of backward linkage whereby a big company subcontracts jobs to a smaller company who has access to the resource base but does not possess the former's technology is being encouraged.

Out of the ashes
Article Abstract:
Thai Tantalum Corporation Ltd is an example of a startup company that has managed to survive physical destruction. The company's power plant was burned down in 1986 and its German partner, Hermann C. Stark, withdrew. In 1992, the company has been able to fully rebuild the plant and is ready to produce 600,000 pounds of tantalum annually, a feat that would make the firm the biggest producer of the commodity.
