The missionary widow: Filipina builds on business legacy left by her charismatic husband
Article Abstract:
Loida Lewis has replicated her friend Corazon Aquino's feat of successfully taking up the crusade of a husband struck down in his prime. Unlike the former Philippine president, Lewis married a businessman, African-American Reginald Lewis, who acquired TLC Beatrice in 1987 in a leveraged buy-out. After his death of brain cancer in 1993, she took control of the company, reducing the massive debt left from the LBO and increasing both revenue and profit. Lately she has also helped sell her husband's autobiography.

Pressler under pressure: U.S. Senator fights to maintain Pakistan sanctions
Article Abstract:
Leaders in Washington are seeking a way out of the impasse created in 1990 by the so-called Pressler Amendment that barred all economic and military aid to Pakistan. The US was going to deliver $1.4 billion worth of military equipment, but the law required the president to certify Islamabad had no nuclear bombs, which it could not do. Pakistan has paid for most of the goods, and a compromise that Senator Pressler opposes would give Pakistan $368 million of the equipment it sought.
