The monetary system; institutional changes and the money supply aggregates
Article Abstract:
The amount of money in circulation and in savings in the UK is measured by a variety of means. One such is M3, which is the physical amount of notes and coins in circulation plus bank savings. Another means of calculation is MO, which is notes and coin in use outside banks and monies deposited by banks with the Bank of England. M4 and M5 came into existence in the 1980's and included the above plus deposits in building societies. Changes to these measures occurred in 1986 when building societies were allowed to lend money other than for buying a property.

The financial system and the financing of industry
Article Abstract:
An efficient financial system is vital to the success of a country's economy, as efficiency has a direct impact on the quantity and nature of saving and investment. Some observers have grown increasingly critical of certain structures within the UK financial system over recent years, claiming, for example, that there is a shortage of external funds on acceptable terms for companies. Indeed, companies raise only 20% of funds from external sources, but this does not necessarily mean that the financial system is inadequate.

Stockmarkets, institutional investment and corporate finance
Article Abstract:
The ways in which firms use financial markets as sources of finance are discussed. Companies issue a range of instruments or securities, raising short-term funds from the money markets or long-term funds from the capital markets. Most new issues are purchased by institutional shareholders, but individuals and households also have interest in these capital market assets.
