The 'more for less' solution
Article Abstract:
Telecommunications technology in terms of lightwave communications has undergone tremendous growth since 1992. One factor that has contributed largely to this is the carrying capacity of submarine optical fiber cables. In 1989, the first trans-Pacific digital optical fiber cable or TPC-3 has a capacity to handle 16,500 telephone calls. In Oct 1992, the TPC-4 will double this capacity and in 1995, the TPC-5/6 will increase by ten times TPC-4's capacity. However, this is not the ultimate in telecoms technology. Bell Laboratories is developing a pulse known as the soliton whose tremendous potential will surpass that of the TPC-5/6.
