Deep in hock
Article Abstract:
Many financial borrowers in Japan are heavily debted to creditor companies because it was easy during the 1980s to borrow money. An individual could borrow up to $14,000 even without collateral or other conventional creditworthiness requirements. As a result, the borrowersare having a hard time paying up during the economic slump. In a way, the borrowers are hoping for an economic recovery to save them from their problems. The national economy, on the contrary, is dependent on consumer well-being in order to improve. In the meantime, banks and creditor companies are revising and tightening their lending policies.
