The transition of power to Jiang Zemin is expected to go smoothly. Jiang had already been ruling for a few years, although no one dared challenge Deng's policies while he was still alive. Challenges to Jiang's power are expected to be subdued at least until the reunification with Hong Kong is complete.

More people are trying to determine what political direction China will take as it takes on a greater global economic role. China is the last large communist country, and the authoritarian leadership it is currently under cannot last, but changes are needed. How they will occur is unknown.

After Deng

Deng, who died on Feb 19, 1997, leaves behind a mixed legacy. He implemented economic reforms in 1978, that greatly improved economic conditions for millions of Chinese. However, he also was responsible for subduing the Tiananmen Square uprising and he failed to pick a successor.
