Hague's breather
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Conservative Party performed well in local elections in May 1999, gaining over 1,300 seats, and the control of over 50 councils. The last local elections were in 1995, when the party performed poorly, and the European elections may not see such a strong performance for the party. The Conservatives did not win any seats in Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, or Liverpool, and have control over no single council in Wales or Scotland. The Liberal Democrats are providing the main opposition to the Labor party in Northern England.

Blair's power politics
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Labor party has held its conference in Sep 1998 and the position of the leadership has been strengthened. Debate is permitted, but the voting system has been changed and there is less pressure on ministers to listen to the views of members of the party. New selection rules for candidates have been introduced, and a candidate has to be chosen to stand for mayor of London. The debate on internal democracy within the Labor party is seen as important for democracy as a whole in the United Kingdom.
