The new nationalism
Article Abstract:
China's leaders are encouraging a dangerous form of nationalism that worries both advocates of democracy at home and international neighbors. The country is responding with a new assertiveness that many fear could lead to open conflict, or at least regional destabilization that might boost the Chinese military's fortunes. Foreign businessmen who have flocked to China in the past three years report a growing anti-foreign backlash that may ultimately slow China's growth. The US is a particular target of nationalist vitriol.

Hazardous to health
Article Abstract:
Yuxi Cigarette chairman Chu Shijian's experience exemplifies the struggles in China over introducing capitalism to state enterprises. Terrifically successful in growing his business, he seems set to rule the world's largest cigarette market. Those around him admire his vision, open mind, forthright speech, and ability to work with the system. Now that system has turned against him, however, with his wife and daughter imprisoned and pressure rising for him to step down. A more graceful departure may be in the offing.

Back to normal: U.S.-China trade war looms closer
Article Abstract:
US-China trade relations have returned to their usual rocky state after a brief respite. The US is angry over China's reluctance to enforce its copyright-protection laws against pirate manufacturers who cost US companies $1 billion annually. Computer software and compact discs are among the biggest US losers. While most observers expect the dispute to end peacefully, the US has launched an investigation that seeks progress by Feb 4, 1995. Chinese moves to comply would prevent more disruption.
