Benefits and beggars
Article Abstract:
Renewed interest in the generalized system of preferences (GSP) arose because of delayed talks on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. GSP was instituted in the 1970s to boost investments in local industries and to cultivate international business ties. However, the plan failed because it was complex, inconsistent and dominated by importers. Neither did export companies of developing countries fully benefit from the import liberalization scheme. Southeast Asian countries have also realized that international competition can be achieved through self-reliance and not through preferential trade policies.

Six years at the Review
Article Abstract:
The Far Eastern Economic Review had only a very small workforce in the late 1950s, and its paid circulation was very low. It was vital to make some key changes in order to boost the magazine's fortunes. These included moving advertising from the front cover to the inside pages, persuading two rival UK banks to run their annual chairman's statements in full every spring and improving the layout. It required a great deal of hard work to make the magazine more attractive to readers and advertisers.
