Out of the shadows; reformist Ichiro Ozawa steps up to centre-stage
Article Abstract:
Japan's New Frontier Party recently chose Ichiro Ozawa to lead it to hoped- for control of the govt and a renewed push to get significant reforms under way. Ozawa led the rebels who defected from the Liberal Democratic Party in 1992, and while he is unpopular outside the party, his strong personality and identifiable principles make him stand out. The LDP, led by charismatic Ryutaro Hashimoto, struck at the Buddhist-backed NFP by passing a bill to restrict religious groups.
