Uzbekistan leader Islam Karimov hopes to make his newly independent nation the strongest in Central Asia. Though rich in natural resources, social and ethnic tension could prevent Uzbekistan from achieving its potential. Foreign investors looking for political stability are likely to be disappointed.

The Fergana valley in Central Asia is an area full of tensions which is causing the government of Uzbekistan real concern. Uzbekistan Pres Islam Karimov has clamped down on militants in the Fergana valley, but the widespread poverty and wish for democracy is fuelling tensions in the area.
