The death-penalty verdict for 'Megan's law' murderer Jesse Timmendequas, who was abused as a child, and the liability placed on tobacco firms for smoking deaths send contradictory messages about responsibility. Advertising does influence behavior, but people themselves must take the responsibility.

The tobacco industry is negotiating a settlement of medical claims that could cost cigarette companies $300 billion in the next 25 years. The talks have not discouraged investors or hurt tobacco stocks, because a settlement would provide compensatory savings.
