Israel's war with the Hezbollah in Lebanon flared up just as the national campaign began, and could influence the outcome of the election. Voters will still choose from among thirty parties, but they have to vote for either Shimon Peres or Binyamin Netanyahu for prime minister, on a separate ballot.

Will Netanyahu bring in Peres?
Article Abstract:
Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not had much success in promoting peace with Palestinians, and the recent bombings in Israel demonstrate the dissatisfaction of Palestinians. The inclusion of Labor Party leader Shimon Peres in Netanyahu's government could help the process.

Article Abstract:
Shimon Peres is still the leading candidate in Israel's May 29, 1996, elections, in spite of the suicide-bomb related conflict earlier in the year. The ex-Soviet Union immigrants, the Israeli-Arabs, and the ultra-orthodox are three populations that are difficult to poll.
