The planning process: what goes on behind closed doors
Article Abstract:
Planning officials can have a lot of influence on the design of buildings but the negotiations between architects and planners are rarely publicised. An exhibition at the Royal Institute of British Architects entitled 'Before and After Planning' shows designs which were altered as a result of the planning process. Planning can be arbitrary and does not necessarily produced better designed buildings. Changes can cause additional expense and delay for the project. However, architects are inconsistent in the quality of material submitted to planners.

Much still to learn abaout using colour
Article Abstract:
The Colour in Architecture exhibition shows fifteen different examples of the architectural use of colour. They fall into four basic groupings; applications of bright colours, the use of natural light on white walls, the expression of colour inherant in materials and the use of natural materials to give brightly coloured finishes. The exhibition fails to display the diverse ideas as it is limited by the small space and the use only of photographs and drawings. It gives little understanding of a complex subject.
