Article Abstract:
Marketers can come up with effective advertising by taking people's conflicting sides into account. Various forensic techniques and psychological tests are employed to determine what consumers think and feel. However, what one does maybe in contrast with how one thinks of oneself. In advertising, using the `dinner-party excuse' is one way of taking people's conflicting sides into account and reconciling people's action with how they think about themselves.

O&M hit by Telus losses

Oglivy and Maher (O and M), an ad agency based in Vancouver, British Columbia, is scaling back its operation after losing several accounts from Telus, a huge telecommunications company based in Burnaby, British Columbia. After being shortlised in several Telus accounts, O and M is left with two clients, namely Dominion Directory Information Services, which provides the Yellow Pages for Telus, and BC Ferries. O and M is now operating a skeleton office.

Canada unaffected by Lowe deal
Article Abstract:
The merger between Ammirati Puris Lintas (APL) and and Lowe & Partners is expected to have little effect on the Canadian advertising market. The merged firm, Lowe Lintas & Partners will be managed mostly by executives of Lowe & Partners. Frank Lowe will remain chmn and CEO while Martin Puris, chmn CEO and chief creative office of APL will resign. Lowe Lintas will operate in 80 countries and will have billings of $11 billion.
