The powerful pound: sterling strength should not distract the Bank of England from its real task
Article Abstract:
The strong performance of the sterling pound should not divert the Bank of England from its objective of determining interest rates by considering inflation. The Bank of England must not let the pound's effect on exporters and unemployment affect the bank's monetary policies. The pound went beyond an exchange rate of DM3.00 and reached nearly $1.70 between mid-1996 and mid-1997, representing a 24% increase based on trade-weighted measure.

How high?
Article Abstract:
The Bank of England hiked the base rate by a quarter of a point to 6.75%, which is more modest than the half point increase that many economists predicted. A growing number of economists believe that more drastic increases will be needed to reign in consumer spending.
