The scheduling problem where multiple machines compete for a common local buffer
Article Abstract:
The single-buffer scheduling problem for a two-stage job shop was examined. The problem, which pertains to the minimization of the sum of weighted completion times of an arbitrary set of jobs, involved the use of a common buffer between the multi-machine first stage and single-machine second stage of operations. A Lagrangian and a combined Lagrangian surrogate relaxation were carried out to derive two lower bounds to the problem and facilitate its solution via four priority rule-based heuristics.
