The season of El Nino
Article Abstract:
The warm Pacific Ocean current called El Nino was much larger than usual in 1997-98, disrupting normal weather patterns around the world. Some 900 people were killed, as were hundreds of thousands of livestock, and economies were some $20 billion poorer. Specific results are discussed.

Fujimori against El Nino
Article Abstract:
Fujimoro is overseeing preventative efforts to lessen damage likely to be caused by El Nino, which forecasters believe will exceed that of 1982-83. Peru expects to fare the worst of all the Andean countries, because of expected torrential rains in the north and drought in the south.
