Garbage in, garbage out
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom interest rates were raised to 7.5% from 7.25% in Jun 1998and held steady until rates were cut in Oct 1998. The rate rise was due to concern about wage rises, but these rises were not as high as had been feared, following statistical revisions. Policymakers are also concerned about unemployment levels. They argue that they should not drop too far or inflationary pressures will result, but no-one knows how far they can drop before this happens, and whether the level is changing.

A shocking error
Article Abstract:
The high level of unemployment in Europe has been attributed to rigidities in the labor market, and to some extent this is true, since recessions can leave rigid labor markets with structural problems. The loss of skills among the long-term unemployed creates problems, as is shown by Harvard's Justin Wolfers and Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Olivier Blanchard. Tight macroeconomic policies and other domestic shocks can exacerbate the problem, they argue, as can external shocks.

The South African worry: jobless growth is joyless growth
Article Abstract:
South Africa can improve its unemployment problem and high crime problem by creating more free enterprise and increasing productivity. This could be done by quicker privatization, easing labor regulation, and taking away remaining exchange controls.
