The silicon shake-up: solar companies that dealt with shortage early prosper
Article Abstract:
A shortage of refined and purified silicon over the past four years has given smaller solar energy companies an opportunity to challenge larger, well-established firms. Purified silicon is a key component in solar panel manufacturing, as well as the most expensive, and a majority of firms are locked into long-term contracts at high, fixed prices. However, some companies have re-engineered production processes to use less silicon, while others recycle bits of silicon cast off during manufacturing.
