The state of Islam: Southeast Asia's social contract
Article Abstract:
Southeast Asia's Muslim nations have proven that economic growth can cohabit with religious faith, but they must also understand that governmental structure is as important as individual virtue in reducing corruption. Those nations that reduce the temptations to those in political power, those that reward virtue while allowing for individual failings, will ultimately do best. Critics in Europe and elsewhere should recognize the dangers a Western philosophy of self-fulfillment can pose, as well as those of theocracy.
